The #23 Holden Commodore is built with one thing in mind ..... To Win!

Designed and built in-house by the talented crew at AV8 Motorsport this car utilises the latest thinking in NZV8 design and over 8 years experience running Holdens at the front of New Zealand’s premier racing category. The NZV8’s are designed as a ‘controlled’ class with many of the main components of a set design and common to all cars, this is to keep competition close and costs down.

Starting with a brand new Holden Commodore body shell, 650 man hours later it is lightened to within an inch of its life, fitted with the 4130 Chrome Moly tube safety cage that forms the key structural part of the car as well as providing maximum safety for the driver (and occasional passenger) and painted ready to start being fitted with all the necessary goodies to make a competitive NZV8 race car:

  • Holden 304 cubic inch (5 litre) V8 race engine, built by AV8 Motorsport mad professor and engine guru Steve to maximise performance under the tightly controlled rules. 200 hrs of Steve’s genius returning 420-430hp at the maximum rev limit of 6400rpm
  • Jerico WC4-4 straight cut race gearbox and Exedy twin plate clutch, perfect for those full throttle clutchless upshifts!
  • Adjustable Koni dampers (NZV8 control part) and AV8 Motorsport anti roll bar set up for bouncing off the curbs
  • Live axle rear end with locked spool differential and 3.08 gears, just enough for maximum revs at the end of the straight at Pukekohe
  • Willwood 6 piston brake callipers up front and 4 piston on the rear, with DBA brake rotors and Endless pads to pull the whole show to a stop at the end of the straights!
  • Built in brake water spray cooling unit to try and keep the above from turning to liquid hot magma......
  • Advanti racing 17x9 inch alloy wheels..... Why??...because Advanti make cool wheels!
  • Dunlop D14 racing slicks and R92 W08 treaded wet tyres to keep the show ON the road.

Inside the cabin we’ve got Sparco carbon fibre race seat and steering wheel, heated front windscreen from Custom Autoglass (a real necessity in Invercargill!).  Motec dash board and downloadable data acquisition system so the driver has pretty lights to look at and the engineer knows when the driver’s lying about how many mistakes he made!

All this is wrapped up in standard Commodore sheet metal and NZV8 control front spoiler, side skirts and rear wing.  A strict diet for both car and driver keep the whole package down to the minimum weight limit of 1440kg

All finished and being loaded up for the first run at the track......
